From Curious to Comfortable: Your First Yoga Studio Experience

Natural light, supportive props, and a space where every body is welcome.

What to Expect the First Time You Try Yoga at a Studio

Trying yoga for the first time can feel a little intimidating. Maybe you’ve been curious for a while, or maybe you’re Googling “yoga studios near me in Scranton” or “yoga for beginners Clarks Summit” and wondering if you’ll fit in. If that’s you - excited, nervous, curious, or even a little scared - know this: you belong here.

You Already Have a “Yoga Body”

Yoga isn’t about how your body looks or moves, every body can practice, exactly as it is. One of the most common worries people have is they’re “not flexible enough” or “too out of shape” to try yoga. The truth? Yoga isn’t about how your body looks or moves. Feeling like you’re “bad at yoga” is like thinking you’re too dirty to take a shower, it just doesn’t make sense. Every body is welcome, just as it is.

I’ll never forget my first yoga class. I felt lost, unsure, and a little out of place. That experience is exactly why creating a welcoming, judgment-free space is so important to me. Everyone deserves a chance to try yoga and feel like they belong.

Props, Mats, and Comfort

Many yoga studios charge to rent props, but at Jaya Yoga, mats, blocks, straps, and bolsters are all available for use at no extra cost. You don’t have to bring a single thing, just yourself. Comfortable clothing and a water bottle are all you really need.

Props aren’t a “shortcut,” they’re tools to help bodies find the safest, most effective alignment. Our bodies are all different: our joints, bones, and muscles aren’t built the same way, and that’s okay. Blocks, straps, and bolsters simply help you show up in your body, wherever it is today, so you can move with support, ease, and confidence. Using props isn’t about being “less than,” it’s about honoring your unique body and making yoga work for you.

Arrive a Little Early

Giving yourself 10–15 minutes before class to park, find your mat, and meet the instructor can make all the difference. Walking in calm and unhurried sets the tone for your practice. Yoga is about presence, not perfection - feeling settled and ready goes a long way.

Curiosity and Kindness First

Yoga invites us to approach ourselves with curiosity and kindness. Instead of worrying about how you’ll look or whether you’ll do everything “right,” notice your breath, how your body feels, and what shows up in the moment. Treat yourself like you would a friend - with patience, encouragement, and kindness.

You’re Welcome, Exactly As You Are

Many people hesitate to try yoga because they feel they need to “be a certain type of person” - calm, flexible etc. Here’s the truth: none of that matters. Yoga is for you. Whether you are stepping onto the mat for the first time, or coming back after a break, or someone who’s never been sure if they’d fit in, you belong here.

Your First Class Is Just the Beginning

Every yoga journey starts somewhere. Your first class is an opportunity to explore, breathe, and reconnect with a part of yourself that’s curious, playful, and open. Smile at the person next to you, ask questions if you want, and let yourself simply be.

And the best part? Every class you take is just a small step on your own path. Yoga isn’t about perfect poses, it’s about showing up for yourself, in your body, in your breath, in your life. Your value as a human is never defined by a yoga pose. It never was, and it never will be. Yoga is about experience, not outcome. You’re welcome here exactly as you are whenever you’re ready.
